I am no classical music buff but I couldn't I help noticing while on a recent Greenaway kick that soundtracks by Micheal Nyman had some theme appropriate references to operatic numbers by 17th Century composer Henry Purcell.
The Cold Song VS Time Lapse
The songs even kick off on the same chords but Nyman's deviates fairly quickly.
Dido's Lament (after the intro) VS The Garden is Becoming a Robe Room
I like Nymans semi-sarcastic appropriation of classical music styles and cliches. He seems to be honouring Purcell here by positioning him as a forefather of minimalism.
